The Library Company of Philadelphia is a rare book library and museum located in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1731, it is the oldest cultural institution in the United States. It was founded by Benjamin Franklin and his associates to serve as a library for the city of Philadelphia, and the collection has grown to over 600,000 books, pamphlets, manuscripts, prints and photographs.

The Library Company holds an extensive collection of both printed and manuscript materials related to American history, literature, science, and the arts, as well as an impressive collection of special materials related to the history of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. It also houses a large collection of rare books and manuscripts from the 16th and 17th centuries, including the first edition of William Penn’s Frame of Government, the earliest surviving book printed in Philadelphia, and the first edition of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. The Library Company also holds important collections of maps, prints, photographs, and ephemera.

The Library Company also serves as a research center, hosting scholars from all over the world who come to study its historical collections. It also offers a wide range of educational and public programs and tours for all ages. The Library Company hosts a variety of lectures and exhibitions, as well as an annual summer institute for teachers.
