FORT MIFFLIN ON THE DELAWARE

FORT MIFFLIN ON THE DELAWARE is an historic fort built in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1771, designed to protect the city from foreign attack. It is located on the Delaware River’s Mud Island, just south of Philadelphia International Airport. The fort was built to provide protection from the British Navy during the American Revolution, and later served as a base for coastal defense during the Civil War.

The fort is composed of five bastions, or defensive structures, named for prominent Philadelphians. The fort has a long, rich history, surviving both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
