US CHRISTIAN COMMISSION

GETTYSBURG, PA

The US Christian Commission was a volunteer organization that provided spiritual and physical comfort to Union soldiers during the American Civil War. In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Commission set up a temporary headquarters during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. The Commission's mission was to provide aid and support to wounded and sick soldiers, as well as to offer religious guidance and moral support.

Volunteers from various Christian denominations, including ministers, nurses, and laypeople, worked tirelessly to tend to the needs of soldiers. They distributed food, clothing, and medical supplies, and provided emotional support through prayer and counseling. The Commission also facilitated communication between soldiers and their families by delivering letters and arranging for visits.

The US Christian Commission played a significant role in the Gettysburg campaign, providing comfort to soldiers who were in desperate need of assistance. Their efforts were widely recognized and praised by both military and civilian authorities. The Commission continued to operate throughout the rest of the war, providing aid and support to soldiers on both sides until the conflict ended in 1865.
