PEARL S. BUCK HOUSE
PERKASIE, PA
Pearl S. Buck House, located in Perkasie, Pennsylvania, is the former home of Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winning author, Pearl S. Buck. The house was built in 1871 in the Greek Revival style and is situated on the corner of Market and Chestnut Streets. The two-story house features a wrap-around porch, a steeply pitched roof and clapboard siding.
The house was designed for living and entertaining. It has a spacious living room, dining room, library, kitchen, and pantry. The upper floor of the house contains six bedrooms, a bathroom, and a sewing room.
In 1934, Pearl S. Buck and her third husband, Richard Walsh, bought the house and made it their home for the next sixteen years. During this time, Pearl wrote some of her most famous works, such as The Good Earth, The Mother, and The Spirit and the Flesh.
Pearl and Richard sold the house in 1950 and moved to Danby, Vermont. The house sat vacant for several years until it was purchased by the Pearl S. Buck Foundation in 1969. The Foundation carefully restored the house to its original condition and opened it to the public as a museum in 1971.
Today, the Pearl S. Buck House is a National Historic Landmark and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can tour the house and learn more about the life and works of Pearl S. Buck. The house is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from April to October.
