The Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation (ORHF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich railroad history of Portland, Oregon. Located in the heart of the city, the ORHF operates three historic steam locomotives: Southern Pacific 4449, Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700, and Oregon Railroad & Navigation Co. 197. These locomotives are housed in a state-of-the-art facility that includes a working roundhouse, a restoration shop, and a museum.
The ORHF was founded in 2002 by a group of dedicated volunteers who were passionate about preserving and sharing the history of Portland's railroads. Today, the organization has grown to include over 800 members and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain and operate the historic locomotives.
The Southern Pacific 4449 is perhaps the most famous locomotive in the ORHF collection. Built in 1941, this locomotive was used to pull the famous Daylight passenger train between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It was retired in 1957 and eventually donated to the City of Portland in 1958. After a restoration, the 4449 was returned to service in 1975 and has since become a beloved symbol of Portland's rail history.
The ORHF offers a variety of educational programs and events throughout the year, including train rides, tours of the facility, and special exhibitions. The organization is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Portland's railroads for generations to come.
