HISTORIC HUNTSVILLE FOUNDATION INC

The Historic Huntsville Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization located in Huntsville, Alabama. Established in 1966, the organization works to preserve and protect the city’s historic resources and promote its heritage. The foundation helps to foster appreciation and respect for Huntsville’s unique past.

The Foundation has achieved much over the years, including the creation of the Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission in 1969, the preservation of numerous historic sites and homes, and the development of an extensive collection of Huntsville-area historical photographs. The Foundation also offers educational programs, lectures, and tours that focus on the city’s history.

The Foundation’s main office is located in the Historic Huntsville Depot, which was built in 1860 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Foundation also owns and operates the EarlyWorks Family of Museums, a complex of museums and attractions that includes the Historic Huntsville Depot, the EarlyWorks Children’s Museum, and the Historic Huntsville Museum.

The Historic Huntsville Foundation Inc. works closely with other local organizations to promote Huntsville’s history and heritage. These include the Historic Huntsville Quarterly, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Huntsville Botanical Garden, and the Alabama Center for the Arts. In addition, the Foundation works with the Huntsville Landmarks Foundation and the Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission to foster greater appreciation and respect for the city’s past.

The Historic Huntsville Foundation Inc. is a valuable asset to the citizens and visitors of Huntsville, Alabama. Through its efforts, the Foundation works to preserve the city’s history and to ensure that its legacy lives on for generations to come.

Rockets Away! 2012 Student Launch Projects (NASA, Marshall, 4/22/12) Specially crafted rockets soared high into the skies April 22 at the 2011-12 NASA Student Launch Projects challenge. More than 500 students, representing 53 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities in 28 states, launched rockets of their own design -- complete with working science payloads or engineering payloads -- at Bragg Farms in Toney, Ala.

The students vied to see whose rocket could come closest to the 1-mile altitude goal and safely return its onboard science payload to Earth. Fifty-one teams took part, though two faced mechanical or technical issues and did not launch. Ten preliminary awards were presented, and the grand prize -- $5,000 from ATK Aerospace Group in Salt Lake City, Utah -- will be awarded May 18 after final post-flight analysis and review are complete. This is the fifth year ATK has sponsored Student Launch Projects.

Great Moonbuggy Race, 1994 (NASA, Marshall, Archive, 1994) The NASA Great Moonbuggy Race is an annual event, held at the US Space and Rocket Center and organized by the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., in which high school and college students are challenged to design, build and race lightweight, human-powered moonbuggies that tackle many of the same engineering challenges dealt with by Apollo-era lunar rover developers at Marshall in the late 1960s.

This photograph of the University of Alabama at Huntsville moonbuggy team was taken during the first running of the event at Redstone Arsenal in 1994 over the actual course where the original lunar roving vehicles were tested. The 20th Annual Great Moonbuggy Race will take place April 26-27 at the US Space and Rocket Center.

LAGEOS I Laser Geodynamics Satellite (NASA, Marshall, Archive, 1976) The LAGEOS I, Laser Geodynamics Satellite, was launched on May 4,1976 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The two-foot diameter, 900-pound satellite orbited the Earth from pole to pole and measured the movements of the Earth's surface relative to earthquakes, continental drift, and other geophysical phenomena. The mirrored surface of the satellite precisely reflected laser beams
from ground stations for accurate ranging measurements. Scientists at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. came up with the idea for the satellite and built it at the Marshall Center.

The Marshall Room (NASA, Marshall, 03/19/13) NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center Director Patrick Scheuermann, participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 11 for the chamber's newly named Marshall Room. 2016 NASA in the Park More than 7,000 people attended NASA Marshall Space Center and Downtown Huntsville, Inc.’s third annual celebration of NASA and the community June 18. This year, the event moved to Huntsville’s Big Spring Park, becoming ‘NASA in the Park.’ The celebration featured fun for all ages, live music performed by Marshall team members and a special appearance by NASA astronaut Don Thomas.
