The Sumpter Valley Railroad is a 2-foot narrow gauge railroad located in Baker City, Oregon. The railroad travels through the scenic Sumpter Valley, offering guests a unique glimpse into the area’s history and culture. The Sumpter Valley Railroad was originally constructed in 1909 by the Sumpter Valley Railway Company, with the intent of transporting passengers and freight between Baker City and Sumpter. The railroad was operational until the 1930s, when it ceased operations due to the declining ore industry.

The railroad was eventually acquired by the United States Forest Service in 1960 and restored to its original condition. The Sumpter Valley Railroad Museum was also established to house the railroad’s historic equipment. In 1988, the Sumpter Valley Railroad was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the Sumpter Valley Railroad is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Baker City. It offers a variety of rides, including a scenic 2-hour round-trip excursion, a dinner train, and a special holiday train. The railroad also hosts special events throughout the year, such as the "Day Out With Thomas" event, which features an appearance by Thomas the Tank Engine.
