The National Railway Historical Society Pacific Northwest Chapter (NRHS-PNWC) is a non-profit volunteer organization based in Portland, Oregon. The mission of the chapter is to preserve and promote the history of railroads in the Pacific Northwest. The NRHS-PNWC was founded in 1967 and is a chapter of the National Railway Historical Society which was established in 1935.
The NRHS-PNWC is dedicated to the preservation of all aspects of railroad history from the earliest steam locomotives to the latest diesel-electric locomotives. The chapter’s activities include organizing educational programs, field trips, and excursions. The chapter also publishes an award-winning monthly newsletter, “The Portland Express” as well as a quarterly magazine, “The Pacific Railroader”.
The chapter also has a museum located in Sellwood, Oregon. The museum is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the region’s railroad history. It houses artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the region’s railroads. The museum also features a library of over 10,000 books, periodicals, and other publications related to railroad history.
The NRHS-PNWC is active in the community and participates in many educational and charitable activities. The chapter has partnered with local schools, libraries, and other organizations to promote railroad education and safety. They also volunteer with railroads to improve operations and safety. The chapter is open to anyone interested in railroad history and welcomes new members.
