The Lord and Schryver Conservancy is a non-profit organization located in Salem, Oregon, dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver, two influential landscape architects who designed many of the city’s most iconic gardens and outdoor spaces in the early 20th century.
Established in 2001, the conservancy works to maintain and restore the historic gardens designed by Lord and Schryver, including the Gaiety Hollow and Deepwood estates, which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The conservancy also offers educational programs and tours, as well as community events and workshops, to promote awareness and appreciation of the work of these pioneering women.
The Gaiety Hollow estate, located in the heart of Salem, features a formal garden with a sunken pool and fountain, a woodland garden with winding pathways and a pond, and a vegetable garden. The Deepwood estate, also located in Salem, features a formal garden with a reflecting pool, a woodland garden, and a naturalistic streambed.
The Lord and Schryver Conservancy is committed to preserving these historic gardens for future generations, while also promoting the principles of sustainable landscape design and environmental stewardship. Their work honors the legacy of Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver, who helped shape the character and beauty of Salem through their innovative and timeless designs.
