The Western Railway Preservation Society (WRPS) is a nonprofit organization based in Baker City, Oregon, dedicated to the preservation and restoration of vintage railroads. The organization was founded in 1990 and is supported by volunteers from all over the United States. WRPS owns and operates several vintage railroad cars and engines, including two steam locomotives and a diesel locomotive. WRPS also serves as a rail museum, offering educational tours and excursions on their restored railcars.
The WRPS is committed to the preservation and restoration of vintage railroads, as well as the history and culture that come with them. They work to acquire, restore, and maintain vintage railroad cars and locomotives, as well as the equipment and infrastructure necessary to operate them. WRPS also works to provide educational opportunities for the public, offering educational tours, excursions, and special events to promote the appreciation of the railroads. They also offer educational programs and lectures at their facility in Baker City.
The WRPS is supported by donations from members, corporations, and other organizations, as well as through fundraising activities and special events. All funds raised go towards the preservation and restoration of the vintage railroad equipment. WRPS also receives support from the local and state government. The WRPS has over 200 volunteers and several full-time staff members who work together to maintain and operate the vintage railcars and locomotives.
