Arvest Tower That took me by what is now the tower building for Arvest Bank. The eight-story Classical Revival or Italianate style building was constructed in 1924 as Union National Bank. It is scored concrete on the lower two floors and brick above that. For years it was covered with white exposed-aggregate panels. Thankfully, Arvest invested in stripping off that covering and restoring the original facade in 2005-2006. Historically, H.V. Foster was the Chairman of Union Bank and Foster Petroleum once occupied two floors of the building. His La Quinta mansion is now Oklahoma Wesleyan University in south Bartlesville. Before the Union Bank building, there was an American National Bank building here.
Alley Shop Rita Thurman Barnes is a local writer who runs the Once Upon a Time in Bartlesville Facebook group. This parking lot broke her heart, as it was what replaced the historic Odeon/Osage Theater. She and many others loved seeing movies there back in the day, but it was torn down in the 1970s. You can look straight through that parking lot to see the little alleyway garage building at 319 1/2 Dewey Avenue, behind the Pioneer Building, that for awhile was the home to Shorties Grille, which was also a food truck but is now the contracted food provider at the Phillips 66 Research Center. The garage is now Frankie P's and can be rented for events. Bob Tate's reworked west side I moseyed on down 2nd Street to check on the update at Bob Tate's Tire & Service. I passed the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, which is in an area of the street that burned on January 29, 1951 with multiple destroyed buildings. The NE corner of 2nd Street and Johnstone Avenue was originally the First National Bank and the Almeda Hotel was built around it. The Almeda had 60 rooms and 14 private baths and operated from 1905 to 1948. It was demolished in 1961. The building to the east was the Osage Garage and has been extensively remodeled. It now houses Bob Tate Tires & Service. For many years there was a lower level below the parking lot on its west side, but that was recently reworked and sealed up.
Bob Tate's sealed west side lower level And here you can see how that lower level has been reworked and sealed up. I decided not to continue down 2nd Street, saving that for a future history walk. Instead, I turned and headed south down Johnstone Avenue.
Courthouse Annex This was built as the C. E. Burlingame Center and was Denton's Fashion Center, but it has been used for county offices for years.
Central Fire Station Just north of the police station is the Central Fire Station. It was originally built in 1942 and was renovated with code upgrades and reorganization. New restrooms, bunkrooms, a kitchen, a dayroom, and a hardened operations command room were included in the renovation. The first floor has equipment storage, apparatus bays, and fitness facilites while the second floor has a 40-person training room, storage, and fire administration department. An addition included a 90-foot drive-through apparatus bay and equipment support spaces with a new elevator, slide, and stairs.
Community Center and Unity Square Near the Price Tower is Unity Square, a greenspace for public events that connects with The Center, better known to me as the Bartlesville Community Center. I love the Community Center, with its superb auditorium, Great Hall, and other spaces that host countless community events. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protege William Wesley Peters. It was built from 1979 to 1982 and, unlike the Price Tower, it has an endowment to help defray operational costs.
Diane Dixon benches at the library Out in front of the library are some benches honoring the late Diane Dixon. I had the pleasure of interviewing Diane when she was selected for the 2018 Bartlesville Educator Hall of Fame. She was a firecracker!
First City Hall and the old bus depot This looks like a single building, but it is two structures conjoined by the stucco exterior finish. The easternmost structure is the first City Hall built around 1903 which was replaced by one at 4th Street and Dewey Avenue in 1910. Around 1930, a new building was built directly west and served as the city bus depot. It was later expanded and stuccoed, probably around 1946 when the nearby depot was stuccoed.
Depot The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe/Missouri-Kansas-Texas Depot was originally brick and completed in 1909 for $40,000. In 1946, the Santa Fe railroad stuccoed and remodeled it. The last passenger train departed on April 30, 1971. In 1983-1984, Phillips Petroleum Company rehabilitated it for use by the Bartlesville Chamber of Commerce, which is still there.
