Connecting with the Shimenawa Spirit I was invited to photograph an event at a Japanese school in Pleasanton, California. Two instructors came from Japan to teach Shimenawa, ornaments made of rice straws used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion. Shimenawa vary from a few centimeters to several meters. I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photos from a JPG exposure, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. SF Bay Area 1987 Gay Rodeo (# 0009) Opening ceremony at one of the events of the 1987 International Gay Rodeo Finals in Hayward, CA. If my memory is correct, the rodeo lasted over multiple days and this was not one of the main events, thus the relatively scarce attendance in these photos. I thought that this rodeo was a follow-up from rodeos in previous years in the Bay Area, but per an <u><a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-03-31-mn-18784-story.html" rel="noreferrer nofollow">LA Times</a></u> story, the first Gay Rodeo in California was in LA’s Griffith Park in 1985. There is a good history of gay rodeos on <u><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Gay_Rodeo_Association" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Wikipedia</a></u> and I was surprised to see that the <u><a href="https://theautry.org/about-us/press/autry-museum-american-west-presents-damn-horse-stories-gay-rodeo-performance-brings" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Autry Museum of the American West </a></u> in LA’s Griffith park is a repository of Gay Rodeo information and recently put on a performance entitled <i>That Damn Horse: The Stories of Gay Rodeo</i> -- there’s a wonderful lead photo on the Autry’s webpage. In researching this, I also discovered an online newsletter called <i>Wide Open Country</i> which has a good history titled <i><u><a href="https://www.wideopencountry.com/gay-rodeos/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Drag Queens, Goat Dressing and Hardcore Athletes: Inside the History & Future of Gay Rodeos</a></u></i> with multiple very good photos.
