World War I Spirit of the American Navy Monument (Hobart Oklahoma) Historic World War I Spirit of the American Navy Monument in front of the Kiowa County Courthouse in Hobart, Oklahoma. The memorial is a bronze 1926 version of E.M. Viquesney’s Spirit of the American Navy statue 1920. The Navy statue was intended to be a companion to Viquesney’s Doughboy statues, but far fewer were erected. The monument was listed as a non-contributing resource to the Hobart Downtown Historic District (NRHP District No. 05000130).

The Sailor and adjacent Doughboy statues were two of four originally erected in 1929 at the two ends of the Memorial Bridge on State Hwy 9 over the North Fork of the Red River between Hobart and Granite, Oklahoma. The four statues were removed in the 1960s and placed in storage. The statues were restored and two were re-erected in front of the Kiowa County Courthouse in Hobart in 1978 and the other two were re-erected in a small park in Granite in 1979.

Pairs of Viquesney Doughboy and Spirit of the American Navy statues exist at Hobart and Granite, Oklahoma; Kingman, Arizona; Clearwater, Florida; Naperville, Illinois; Fort Wayne, Indiana and Crowell, Texas (stone version of the Navy statue).
