This is <a href="https://www.augustaky.com/history-of-augusta" rel="noreferrer nofollow"> what the website</a> says: "On September 27, 1862, Colonel Basil Duke led seven companies of Confederate soldiers to Cemetery Hill, above the small town of Augusta. With two pieces of artillery and 350 of [Confederate general John Hunt Morgan] Morgan's finest Raiders, Duke hoped to disperse the Union militia of 125 men stationed there (led by Colonel Joshua T. Bradford and known as the "Home Guard") before crossing the Ohio River and moving on Cincinnati. …Duke's horsemen rode into town, expecting a quick surrender. Instead, the residents of Augusta met the Rebs with a hail of gunfire, mounting a stiff defense that ultimately resulted in hand-to-hand fighting. Duke later reported, 'The hand-to-hand fighting in the houses...was the fiercest and hottest I ever saw. I witnessed in some of them the floors piled with corpses and blood trickling down the stairways.' ​ About fifteen Union soldiers were killed or wounded in the battle. Duke's losses were considerably more severe, with seventy-five to one hundred of his soldiers wounded or killed. Although the Confederates eventually forced the militia to surrender, the battle caused Duke to abandon his plans of taking the war onto Northern soil."
Kentucky men put their women and children in this huge wine cellar to protect them from raiding Confederate soldiers ... before the men themselves went off to save their town of Augusta and stop the Confederates. (Baker-Bird Winery, owners of this place, say it is America's oldest wine cellar.)

Augusta reenactor on the Ohio This 19th-Century dressed lady is part of a dancing troop that participates in Augusta’s day of remembering its <a href="https://explorekyhistory.ky.gov/items/show/15#" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Civil War skirmish</a>. It is apparent that Augusta at the end of the day is an artsy small town, even when reenacting the battle by its home guard against Morgan's raiders of the Confederate Army. The attack on the small Kentucky community was led by Basil Duke, after the killing of its Confederate commander John Hunt Morgan by U.S. troops in Eastern Tennessee. A pro-Union Eastern Tennessean gave Morgan’s position away.
Day's end on the Ohio It is not just the sunset that occupies my thoughts. Looking from the shore of the historic town of Augusta, Kentucky (est. 1786) over the Ohio River, I see the sun setting over the shore of the short-lived spiritualist utopian society of Utopia, Ohio (est. 1844). This place is filled with history.
