The Multicultural Genealogical Center of Southeastern Ohio Inc. (MGCSE Ohio) is a nonprofit organization located in Chesterhill, Ohio. It was founded in 2008 to provide education, research, and preservation of multicultural ancestry.

The mission of MGCSE Ohio is to preserve the diverse histories of families through education, research and collection of primary sources. It offers classes, workshops, and lectures to help people learn more about their family history. The Center also houses a library of genealogical and historical materials, including books, newspapers, magazines, and other records.

MGCSE Ohio also provides research assistance to individuals and organizations interested in genealogy. It also hosts an annual conference with workshops, educational sessions, and networking opportunities.

The Center is a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society and the National Archives and Records Administration. It is also affiliated with the Ohio History Connection and the Ohio Genealogical Society.

MGCSE Ohio is dedicated to preserving the diverse histories of families from all backgrounds and helping people uncover their family’s past. Through education, research, and collection of primary sources, the Center is committed to helping individuals discover their roots and build connections to their ancestors.

Acid Mine Drainage Acid mine drainage flowing out of an abandoned underground coal mine onto the surface. Abandoned, historic coal mines run underneath thousands of acres of the national forest. These abandoned mines have caused many long-lasting environmental problems, such as acid mine drainage. Acid mine drainage occurs when water enters an abandoned mine and interacts with the exposed bedrock. The water becomes acidic and often picks up dangerous heavy metals. This polluted water will often flow back out onto the surface, polluting streams, ponds, and other water bodies. Forest Service photo by Kyle Brooks.
Big Bailey Wetland in the Spring Big Bailey Wetland is a medium-sized wetland found along Big Bailey Run Road outside of Chauncey. The wetland sits between an old abandoned railroad bed and the road. Carbon Sequestration Did you know southeast Ohio’s forests play an important role in absorbing carbon from the atmosphere? Through photosynthesis, trees absorb and store carbon dioxide, locking carbon up in their roots, trunks, branches, and leaves for varying lengths of time. This process is called carbon sequestration. By the absorbing and storing of carbon by forests, the amount of greenhouse gases held in the atmosphere is reduced. This is a good thing, as excess greenhouse gases—like carbon dioxide—contribute to climate change. The ability of forests to sequester carbon means forests will play an important role in mitigating the effects of climate change now and into the future. Most of Ohio’s forest carbon is stored in the southeast region’s oak-dominated forests. The carbon stored in the Wayne National Forest is a relatively small, but important, subset of the total forest carbon stored across the state of Ohio. Recent modeling estimates that the national forest stores over 18 million tons of carbon! All of the forests across the state are estimated to store over 600 million tons of carbon. In a forest, carbon is stored in three main places: in living plants, in dead plants, and in the soil. But there’s some nuance to know. While forests do absorb and store carbon, they also emit carbon back into the atmosphere. As dead vegetation and organic matter decays, carbon that had been stored in it is actually released again. The balance between how much carbon a forest absorbs and how much carbon it emits determines whether a forest is a carbon sink or a carbon source. Forests are a carbon sink most of the time, which means they absorb and store more carbon than they emit. But sometimes forests can actually be a carbon source, especially after events like a large wildfire or pest outbreak. The amount of carbon that a forest both absorbs and emits changes year to year. There are some things that we can do, however, that can make a forest more likely to stay a strong carbon sink. A forest that’s vulnerable to threats—such as disease, pest, and intense wildfires—means the carbon that’s stored in that forest is also vulnerable. Efforts to improve the health and resiliency of a forest is, therefore, a way to improve its ability to absorb and store carbon long-term! Forest Service photo by Kyle Brooks

Volunteering in the Wayne National Forest Volunteers are an essential part of national forest stewardship. Through their work, volunteers make significant, meaningful contributions to their public lands for present and future generations. We have a robust volunteer program at the national forest, and each year hundreds of volunteers contribute over 30,000 hours of work. Our volunteers and their accomplishments have won several regional and national recognition awards. Volunteers include individuals, groups, and organizations of all ages, abilities, and skills. Some regularly work with us year after year, while others join us for a single day of work. Burr Oak Cove Campground Burr Oak Cove Campground is a small densely wooded campground on the northwest tip of Burr Oak Reservoir in Athens County.
