The Canal Winchester Area Historical Society Inc is a non-profit organization founded in 1986. Its mission is to preserve and share the history of the Canal Winchester, Ohio area and its environs by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting artifacts, documents and photographs. It serves as a center for education, research and entertainment.

The Society is housed in the historic former home of the Canal Winchester postmaster, the D.W. Hunter House. It has a research room and museum that are open for the public. There are permanent exhibits on the local area and the Ohio and Erie Canal, as well as changing exhibits throughout the year. The Society also sponsors programs, tours, events and lectures.

The Society’s library and archives include a wide variety of resources, including books, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, photographs and maps. It also has a collection of oral history recordings, which chronicle the life and times of those living in Canal Winchester and the surrounding area.

The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Canal Whistle, which is available for members. It also provides a variety of volunteer opportunities, from helping with research to maintaining the museum. Membership is open to anyone interested in the history of the Canal Winchester area.
