The U.S. Space and Rocket Center Foundation in Huntsville, Alabama is the official educational foundation of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, a Smithsonian affiliate museum. Founded in 1970, the Foundation’s mission is to promote the exploration, understanding and appreciation of space science and technology. The Foundation works to provide educational opportunities, scholarships, exhibitions, and programs within the museum and beyond.

The Foundation is made up of a Board of Directors, comprised of a diverse membership of scientists, business leaders, and educators. They work to ensure the success of the museum and its educational programs. The Foundation also works with a number of partners including NASA, the National Space & Science Foundation, and other aerospace and technology organizations to create innovative educational opportunities.

The Foundation is responsible for the operation of the museum and its educational programs. It is also responsible for the maintenance and preservation of the museum’s artifacts, which include rockets, spacecraft, and artifacts from the space race. Additionally, the Foundation works to expand and develop the museum’s interactive exhibits, activities, and educational materials.

The Foundation works to preserve the legacy of the space race and promote the study of space science and technology. It also works to increase public awareness of the museum’s educational programs, activities, and exhibits. Through its various initiatives, the Foundation is committed to inspiring the next generation of space explorers.

Great Moonbuggy Race, 1994 (NASA, Marshall, Archive, 1994) The NASA Great Moonbuggy Race is an annual event, held at the US Space and Rocket Center and organized by the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., in which high school and college students are challenged to design, build and race lightweight, human-powered moonbuggies that tackle many of the same engineering challenges dealt with by Apollo-era lunar rover developers at Marshall in the late 1960s. This photograph of the University of Alabama at Huntsville moonbuggy team was taken during the first running of the event at Redstone Arsenal in 1994 over the actual course where the original lunar roving vehicles were tested. LAGEOS I Laser Geodynamics Satellite (NASA, Marshall, Archive, 1976) The LAGEOS I, Laser Geodynamics Satellite, was launched on May 4,1976 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The two-foot diameter, 900-pound satellite orbited the Earth from pole to pole and measured the movements of the Earth's surface relative to earthquakes, continental drift, and other geophysical phenomena. The mirrored surface of the satellite precisely reflected laser beams from ground stations for accurate ranging measurements. Scientists at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. came up with the idea for the satellite and built it at the Marshall Center. Preparation for Pouring the Concrete Foundation of Test Stand 4697 A crane, at right, puts reinforcing steel in place in October 2014 to prepare for pouring the concrete foundation of Test Stand 4697 at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The structural test stand is one of two new stands under construction at Marshall that are critical to development of the Space Launch System. SLS will be the world's most powerful rocket for human space exploration, able to carry astronauts in the Orion spacecraft on deep-space missions, including the journey to Mars. The 85-foot-tall Test Stand 4697 will use hydraulic cylinders to subject the liquid oxygen tank and hardware of the massive SLS core stage to the same loads and stresses it will endure during a launch. The stand is rising in Marshall's West Test Area, where work is also underway on the 215-foot-tall towers of Test Stand 4693, which will conduct similar structural tests on the SLS core stage's liquid hydrogen tank. The structure at left in this photo is Test Stand 4699, which is used for Integrated Spacecraft and Payload Element Structural Tests. Test Stands 4697 and 4693 are scheduled for completion in 2016 by prime contractor Brasfield & Gorrie of Birmingham, Alabama, and several of its subcontractors. Launch of Saturn vehicle, SA-1 (NASA, Marshall, Archive, 10/61) On October 27, 1961, the nation looked on as the first Saturn vehicle, SA-1, lifted off from Cape Canaveral and soared to an altitude of 137 kilometers before splashing down 344 kilometers downrange into the Atlantic Ocean. Developed at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun, SA-1 incorporated a Saturn I, Block I engine and was the product of three long years of development. The flight of SA-1 demonstrated the vehicle’s structural integrity, verified the concept of the clustered Saturn booster, and inspired confidence in the Marshall team.
