The Summit County Historical Society in Akron, Ohio is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Summit County. Founded in 1894, the Society has been collecting, preserving, interpreting and sharing the history of the region for more than 125 years.
The Society operates a museum in downtown Akron, which features permanent and rotating exhibitions on topics such as the history of Akron's rubber industry, the Underground Railroad, local Native American history and the history of the Women's Suffrage Movement. The museum also has a research library and archives with a collection of more than 10,000 photographs, manuscripts, books and other materials related to Summit County's past.
The Society also offers educational programs for school groups and the public, and organizes special events throughout the year. These include lectures, tours, workshops, storytelling events and reenactments that bring to life the stories of Summit County's past.
The Society is supported by memberships, grants, donations, and sales from its gift shop. It also holds a variety of fundraising events and activities, such as its Annual Summit County History Day, which draws hundreds of people each year and celebrates the diversity, culture and history of the county.
