The Historic Mobile Preservation Society (HMPS) was established in 1977 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Mobile, Alabama. Its mission is to promote and preserve the rich history and architecture of Mobile and the surrounding area. HMPS serves as a resource and advocate for the preservation of Mobile’s historic sites, neighborhoods, and buildings.

HMPS works with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure that historic sites and neighborhoods are protected and preserved. The organization has been instrumental in the preservation of several historic buildings and properties in the area, including the Richards Darby House (the oldest house in Mobile), the Mobile City Hall, and the Old City Cemetery.

HMPS also sponsors educational and cultural events such as the Mobile Historic Preservation Week, the Historic Home and Garden Tour, and the SmART: Mobile Historic Preservation Series. Through these events, HMPS promotes the appreciation of Mobile’s unique history and culture.

In addition, the organization offers various grant and technical assistance programs to help local citizens and organizations with their historic preservation projects. HMPS also provides resources such as books, brochures, and workshops to educate the public about the importance of preserving Mobile’s rich history and culture.

Royal and Adams, at left is the Driftwood Tavern, Holmes &amp; Co at 357 N Royal and Johnson Motors at 365 N. Royal. Across the street is Neese Lumber at 350 N Royal and R.P. McDavid Electrical supplies at 418 N. Royal. This area would now be located in the center roadway medium of the new Water Street at Adams.
