Operation New Birmingham is a community revitalization movement in Birmingham, Alabama. It was initiated in 1995 as part of the city’s efforts to revive its struggling downtown area. The project seeks to create a vibrant, livable city center with a mix of residential, commercial, and cultural amenities.
The revitalization effort includes multiple initiatives, such as the creation of a downtown entertainment district and the rehabilitation of existing buildings. The City of Birmingham has also created a public-private partnership to facilitate redevelopment. This partnership, called the Birmingham Business Alliance, assists developers in securing financing, provides technical assistance, and promotes investment in the city.
In addition to the business-oriented initiatives, Operation New Birmingham has also worked to encourage the preservation of historic buildings and to create public spaces that are accessible to all residents. To this end, the project has funded the restoration of several historic landmarks, such as the Alabama Theatre and the Lyric Theatre. It has also created pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, improved parks and green spaces, and made other improvements to enhance the quality of life in the city’s downtown.
Operation New Birmingham is ongoing, and it continues to make progress in revitalizing Birmingham’s downtown. The project has been credited with helping to spur economic growth and to create a vibrant and attractive city center.
