Pleasants Power Station, Belmont, WV Built in 1977-1980, this coal-fired power station, known as the Pleasants Power Station, stands along the Banks of the Ohio River just downstream of Belmont, West Virginia. The power station was the site of the Willow Island Disaster in 1978, when one of the concrete cooling towers collapsed during construction due to improper quality control of the concrete and a rushed schedule, leading to the deaths of all 51 workers on the scaffolding actively working on building the tower, who were crushed by falling chunks of concrete and metal scaffolding. The Willow Island Disaster is the deadliest single construction accident in the history of the United States. After the disaster, the power plant construction eventually was resumed, and the power station began operations in 1980. It is scheduled to shut down operations on June 1, 2023.

The BIP On My Radar The BIP was a secondary bonus in my eastern trip earlier this year, and was a fun day out. The new little shortline brought me to West Virginia for the first time (not the last time! Next year fingers crossed), and it also got me out of bed early despite having arrived late the night prior. Very tiring morning to say the least. But, my info was good, and before the sun was even up, the BIP was moving out. Light being the way it is - rather, the lack of it - meant that a decent still photo would be more or less impossible, unless I went long. So, spur of the moment, I wrenched my tripod out of the car and snapped it down in near-record time. I had no time to test, just to set my exposure settings to something sensible and hope for the best. Our pair of BIP GP38-2s and their decent lineup of hoppers and tankers crossed over my vantage point at no more than 10, maybe 15, miles an hour. The Parkersburg high bridge here is something really fantastic - the train is going uphill, to be sure, but not nearly as steeply as you'd think, as both the tracks go up and the roads go down. It's not quite one of those old Tyco bridge pier sets from back in the day, but it sure feels like it! I liked the BIP. I'd come back here for sure.
