The Mecklenburg Historical Association Inc. (MHA) is a non-profit organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in 1912, the MHA is the oldest non-profit cultural organization in the state of North Carolina and the second-oldest in the nation. The mission of the MHA is to promote and encourage the preservation of the region’s rich history through research, education, and public outreach.
The MHA was founded by a group of prominent Charlotteans who were passionate about preserving the area’s history. The association’s initial focus was preserving Revolutionary and Civil War artifacts and documents. The MHA’s main facility, the Hezekiah Alexander House, is a restored 18th-century home located in Charlotte’s historic Dilworth neighborhood. The house is open to the public and serves as a living history museum.
The MHA is a member of the American Association for State and Local History, the Council of State Historical Societies, and the North Carolina Museums Council. The association is funded through membership dues, donations, grants, and fundraising events. The MHA offers a variety of educational programs, lectures, and tours for both children and adults. The association also maintains an extensive library and archives, which are open to the public. The MHA is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the region and is committed to providing visitors with a unique and enriching experience.
