Leaf hider Putty Root - Aplectrum hyemale Foliage present mostly in winter and early spring, like the much more common Cranefly Orchid, Tipularia discolor. I cannot recall seeing so many Aplectrum in a clump like this previously.

Small stag beetle Platycerus quercus - Oak Stag Beetle (male, 8 mm)
Small stag beetle Platycerus quercus - Oak Stag Beetle (female, 9 mm) I found a female and a male under the loose bark of a rotting log, likely an oak. They were quite near each other. Males, apparently, are sometimes found on spring flowers. The Dillons tell us "Mandibles of male as long as head and with about six teeth near apex, in female much smaller". It was nice to find a male and a female together for comparison.
