The Smith-McDowell House Museum in Asheville, North Carolina is a unique piece of local history. Built in 1840, it is the oldest surviving frame house in Buncombe County. The house was built by James McConnell Smith, a prominent local farmer and entrepreneur, and his wife, Sarah. It was home to the Smith family for over a century, and it was eventually sold to the McDowell family in 1915.

The house is a two-story Greek Revival-style structure, with six large rooms and a two-story porch. Visitors can explore these rooms and view artifacts from the Smith and McDowell families, as well as other examples of 19th-century life. A highlight of the museum is the restored kitchen, with period-appropriate furniture and utensils, and a display of 19th-century pottery on the mantel.

The Smith-McDowell House Museum is part of the Western North Carolina Historical Association, and is open for guided tours Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to the regular tours, the museum offers special programs and events throughout the year, including lectures and demonstrations. The museum also offers educational programs for students and teachers.
