The Byron Historical Society (BHS) is a not-for-profit organization located in the town of Byron, New York. Founded in 1987, it is dedicated to preserving the town's rich history and heritage. The Society is also committed to educating and inspiring the community about the unique history of the town and its inhabitants.

The organization's primary mission is to collect, preserve, and share information and artifacts that reflect the history of Byron and its people. The Society operates a museum in the old Byron Town Hall, which is home to a variety of historical objects and photographs. The museum also houses the Society's research library, which consists of a variety of books, periodicals, and other materials related to the town's history.

In addition to its museum and library, the Society regularly hosts programs and events throughout the year. These include educational lectures and workshops, as well as tours of local sites and activities, such as the annual Byron Days celebration.

The Society also works with local schools and organizations to promote understanding and appreciation of the town's history. It provides assistance for research projects or history classes, as well as field trips for students to visit the museum and local sites.

The Byron Historical Society is an important part of the community, and its efforts to preserve the town's history and educate the public has been essential to the town's ongoing success and growth.

January 14, 2023: Pine Hill Cemetery, Elba, New York Scene from a visit to Pine Hill Cemetery in Elba, New York on a frigid winter morning. Extending to an area of about an acre on the parcel otherwise occupied by the Elba United Methodist Church <i>(background)</i> with which it was historically associated, the cemetery dates to 1803 and is a typical example of those that dotted the rural hinterlands of Upstate New York at the time, with many headstones that comprise fine examples of the era's typical funerary artwork. Pine Hill contains the remains of about 600 or 700 individuals, many of whom figure among the village's founding fathers. One especially notable burial was that of John Young (1775-1836), signer of the first deed ever issued by the Holland Land Company: on July 22, 1803, he and his wife Peggy purchased 102 acres on the Oak Orchard Road for the price of $202, on which they operated a farm and a roadside tavern.

At the intersection of Craig and Federal Road, this was the first stop on the DL&W Railroad before it continues southeast through Leicester, Mt. Morris, Groveland, Sparta, and North Dansville. October 2, 2021: Erie Canal at Medina, New York A pleasant view along the Erie Canal looking east from near the village center of Medina, New York.
October 6, 2021: First Presbyterian Church, Medina, New York Built in 1893 to a design by an unknown architect and now part of the Main Street Historic District, First Presbyterian Church in Medina, New York is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture. Caledonia Erie Depot, 1909 On what is now a small residential side street in the village of Caledonia, there once sat the Caledonia Erie Depot. Across the street the Ball Mill processed grain which passing freight trains would transport to Rochester and beyond. The railroad here transported products and people through Caledonia for over 100 years, only to close after the formation of Conrail in 1976. Photography by J.E. Avon Springs Hotel and Erie Depot, Pre-1875 The village of Avon became a bustling transportation hub in the summer of 1853. The rich mineral water of the Avon Springs brought crowds of people to the town's health spas, restaurants, and hotels. This stereoview shows a glimpse of the original Avon railroad depot with it's water tower and the neighboring Avon Springs Hotel. Sadly, all three structures were destroyed in a massive fire on December 13th, 1875 and only the depot was rebuilt. Newell & Co., Medina, New York A contributing property to the NRHP-listed Main Street Historic District in the village of Medina, New York, the three-story Hart Hotel is about as fine an example of High Victorian Italianate commercial architecture as you'll find anywhere in America.
