The California Aviation Preservation Society (CAPS) is an organization dedicated to the preservation, maintenance and restoration of historic aircraft located in San Marcos, California. Founded in 2001, CAPS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and a member of the San Diego Air and Space Museum Auxiliary.
CAPS is committed to preserving aircraft from the Golden Age of Aviation, from World War I to the mid-1970s. The organization has three primary goals: to maintain a collection of historically significant aircraft, to educate the public about aviation history and to provide opportunities for hands-on experience in aircraft restoration.
CAPS operates from a 5,200-square-foot hangar at the San Marcos Airport, where the organization houses and maintains its collection of aircraft. The hangar also serves as the backdrop for educational seminars and workshops, as well as for public events, such as aircraft fly-ins, open houses and fly-outs.
The organization’s aircraft collection includes a 1930 Waco UPF-7 biplane, a 1942 Fairchild PT-19A trainer, a 1944 North American AT-6D Texan, a 1950 Cessna 170A and a 1968 De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver.
CAPS relies on donations and volunteers to carry out its mission. The organization’s volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and possess varying levels of expertise in aircraft maintenance and restoration. CAPS also offers educational programs for adults and children, as well as internships for college students.
