Playing Cards at Craig Colony This group of men may be relaxing in the Colonist's Club, a men's social group founded in 1903 that was exclusively for patients. The men enjoyed a library, theater shows, board games, sports, and picnics. The club ended in 1972 and Dr. John R. Barnard moved his occupational therapy office into the building. originally built circa 1839 as a Shaker residence, it stands today at the Genesee Country Village & Museum. Football Game at Craig Colony, 1899 This dynamic action shot gives us an insight into how the beloved sport of football has changed over time. Most notably, none of these men are wearing helmets. Some have knitted caps while others have what was called a head harness. Invented by Lafayette College football player George Barclay, large pads attached the the harness were meant to protect one's ears and nose. One other difference is that this was a desegregated football game. Professional football players wouldn't accomplish this until 1946.
