May 24, 2023: Cazenovia Creek as seen from Stevenson Street bridge, South Buffalo A panoramic view upstream along Cazenovia Creek in Buffalo, New York, as seen from the Stevenson Street bridge. Formerly a sluggish, flood-prone waterway meandering through marshy terrain, the rerouting of Cazenovia through a relatively straight, steep-sided channel as seen here was completed in 1927 after several decades of planning and construction - thus finally fulfilling the precondition set by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted for the design and construction of the southern extension of Buffalo's famous park and parkway system - and was the shot in the arm that kicked off South Buffalo's formerly sluggish development in earnest.

Former International Railway Company Seneca Street Substation et al., Seneca-Babcock, Buffalo, May 2023 The building at 1231 Seneca Street (cormer Imson Street) in Buffalo, New York is seen in this May 2023 photograph. Though built for a relatively utilitarian purpose - as an electrical substation for city streetcars - this two-story structure of steel-reinforced masonry sports some pretty magnificent Romanesque Revival detailing, with copious decorative brickwork throughout the façade: keystones above the enormous segmentally-arched windows on the ground floor, a double stringcourse above; a dentil row, stepped corbelling, and projecting parapet at the roofline. However, arguably the handsomest feature of the building is the row of regularly spaced oculus windows that lines the upper story. The interior is an open-plan space with concrete flooring and 25-foot ceilings reinforced with exposed steel girders. The facility was built in 1907 by the International Railway Company, the recently merged operator of Buffalo's interurban and street railway network which the previous year had begun work on the new Fillmore Avenue trolley line a few blocks west of here. In addition to the substation and the rails themselves, which were to extend 5.2 miles southward from Main Street to what's now South Park Avenue, the $1.5 million project also included the purchase of additional rolling stock and the construction of a new car barn to serve the line. Some time later, the powerhouse was repurposed to serve the Seneca Street line, which ceased service in September 1941 to be immediately replaced by the No. 15 bus route. Subsequently, 1231 Seneca has been used for various purposes: first by the Brock Tractor Company, a purveyor of road construction and maintenance equipment which leased the building as its offices, retail dealership, and service shop from 1946 until 1954, then as home to cleaning supplies manufacturer Bates Soap until 1959, and a laundry list of small warehouse and light industrial tenants thereafter. At the time this photo was taken, it had recently been purchased after several years of vacancy and was slated to become the new home of Nate's Plumbing.

April 2, 2023: Charles and Virginia Clark House, Elma, New York The work of Frank Lloyd Wright is the obvious influence in the aesthetic of the Charles and Virginia Clark House, built in 1968 on an ample three-acre wooded lot in Elma, New York. September 5, 2019: Heacock Park, South Buffalo A golden-hour view of Heacock Park (also known as Heacock Place) as seen from near the corner of Abbott Road and Southside Parkway in Buffalo, New York. Though diminutive in size at only five acres and bereft of user amenities, Heacock played a role of pivotal importance in Frederick Law Olmsted's original design for Buffalo's park and parkway system, early plans for which called for Fillmore Avenue to be redesigned as an elegant tree-lined thoroughfare comparable to Richmond Avenue on the West Side, which would have extended southward from Martin Luther King Park and thenceforward across the river via what's now South Park Avenue to seamlessly bridge the gap between the northern and southern halves of the network. Heacock, being the northern terminus of McKinley Parkway, would have been the nexus point at which the two connected. Sadly, Olmsted's grand plans for Fillmore Avenue were scuttled by a combination of factors, including the city government's reluctance to allocate necessary funding and the difficulty of navigating multiple busy railroad crossings while maintaining the requisite parklike ambience, but Heacock Park is not totally disused today: its grassy lawns are a popular site for pickup football games and other informal outdoor activities, and it has served each June since 2001 as the launching point for the South Buffalo Parade of Circles, a beloved annual tradition that sees neighborhood residents commemorate Olmsted's legacy in the city with a morning parade along the whole length of McKinley Parkway, featuring music, dancing and community pride aplenty.
