The Big Springs Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in Caledonia, New York. The society was founded in 1971 with the aim of preserving and promoting the rich history and heritage of the local community. September 14, 2019: Atkinson Street in Corn Hill, Rochester, New York A view eastward down Atkinson Street from just past the corner of Greenwood Street in the charming and historic Corn Hill district of Rochester, New York. Also known as the Third Ward, Corn Hill has been cited as Rochester's oldest residential neighborhood, with a history that dates almost as far back as that of the city itself: during the early boom years of the 1820s and '30s, when the newly opened Erie Canal was converting sleepy frontier villages into important inland ports practically overnight, this gently sloping hilltop across from the business district became the residence of choice for the city's newly wealthy flour millers and other incipient industrialists, earning it such jocular nicknames as the "Ruffled-Shirt Ward" and the "Silk Stocking District". Despite Rochester's continued outward growth, Corn Hill held onto its cachet as one of the city's most desirable addresses well into the 20th century. Later, as its fortunes began to level off and decline, the story became one of conflict between, on the one hand, city planners who sought to demolish many of the handsome but deteriorated period homes in the name of urban renewal, and on the other, preservation-minded neighborhood residents who saw in its picturesque Victorian streetscapes the key to its future return to prosperity. Happily, the latter camp won out, and deserve the credit for the successful nomination of the Third Ward Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places, which was made official in 1974.

Although the precise dates of their construction, the particulars of their aesthetic style, and the identities of their early owners differ from each other, they each exemplify the neighborhood's original identity as longstanding haven for Rochester's wealthy elite as well as the commitment of its modern-day denizens to the continuing preservation of what is now the city's oldest and most intact residential historic district. South Lima Erie Railroad When the Erie railroad first came to South Lima in 1852, many locals made their living by farming. The rich soil in the area was so ideal for celery, onions, and mushrooms, that one 1899 article described it as a "boom town." To accommodate the massive amount of produce that was being shipped out on the Erie railroad, the Bahrenburgh Brothers Co. had a wooden storage building built by the Fay & Dryer architecture firm in 1902. Two years later, a spark from a passing train started a fire that destroyed many homes and businesses including the storage building. It's replacement was built the same year and still stands today along Muck Rd. WNY and Pennsylvania Station, Mt. Morris At the turn of the century Mt. Morris was a bustling town of industry. Passenger and freight trains would travel through the villages two trains stations before converging on S. Main St. The Genesee Valley Greenway along Genesee St. follows the tracks where the station stood until the railroad discontinued service in 1963. January 14, 2023: Pine Hill Cemetery, Elba, New York Scene from a visit to Pine Hill Cemetery in Elba, New York on a frigid winter morning. Extending to an area of about an acre on the parcel otherwise occupied by the Elba United Methodist Church <i>(background)</i> with which it was historically associated, the cemetery dates to 1803 and is a typical example of those that dotted the rural hinterlands of Upstate New York at the time, with many headstones that comprise fine examples of the era's typical funerary artwork. Pine Hill contains the remains of about 600 or 700 individuals, many of whom figure among the village's founding fathers. One especially notable burial was that of John Young (1775-1836), signer of the first deed ever issued by the Holland Land Company: on July 22, 1803, he and his wife Peggy purchased 102 acres on the Oak Orchard Road for the price of $202, on which they operated a farm and a roadside tavern.
