The John Thurman Historical Society in Athol, NY was founded in 1980 to preserve and promote the history of the town of Athol. The organization is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of the town and its residents from pre-17th century Native American occupation to the present. The Society operates a museum and archives in a building located on the grounds of the former Thurman homestead, which was established in 1789 by John Thurman.
