May 8, 2022: Erie Canal Lock E-13 as seen from Mohawk Valley Welcome Center, Root, New York Erie Canal Lock E-13 and Movable Dam 9, as seen from the rear of the Mohawk Valley Welcome Center in the town of Root, New York. Built in 1914, Lock E-13's function was to lift and lower canal boats plying the Mohawk River a total height of eight feet. The complex consists of a row of 15 vertical lift gates surrounded at its four corners by concrete machinery cabins, topped with a movable steel truss dam 370 feet in width. On the south (right) side, a narrow concrete spillway carries water past a newly reconstructed lockhouse. The Broadalbin Kennyetto Historical Society Inc is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the town of Broadalbin, NY. Founded in 1978, the society's mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Broadalbin and the Kennyetto Valley.

The society operates a museum located in the historic downtown area of Broadalbin, which features exhibits and artifacts related to the town's history. The museum is open to the public during the summer months and by appointment during the off-season. The society also hosts various events throughout the year, including lectures, tours, and community gatherings.

Erie Canal Lock E13 On our recent road trip we got off the NY Thruway at the Mohawk Valley Welcome Center along the famous Erie Canal and Lock number E13, one of 35 remaining locks. In the background is a freight train on the New York Central tracks. We enjoyed a very pleasant lunch at this sight. This is actually the Mohawk River that is integrated into the Eire Canal system. From tide-water level at Troy, the Erie Canal rises through a series of locks in the Mohawk Valley to an elevation of 420 feet above sea-level at the summit level at Rome. Continuing westward, it descends to an elevation of 363 feet above sea-level at the junction with the Oswego Canal, and finally rises to an elevation of 565.6 feet above sea-level at the Niagara River. The original "Clinton's Ditch" Erie Canal had 83 locks. The Enlarged Erie Canal, built between 1835 and 1862, saw this number reduced to 72 locks. Today, there are 35 numbered locks -- although Lock No. 1 is usually called the Federal Lock -- plus the Federal Black Rock Lock. [eriecanal.org]

LOLA B09/86 Prototype Racer -- Saratoga (NY) Automobile Museum February 2023 Per The Sportscar Racing News of November 30, 2017: A Lola B09/86 prototype racer that Dyson Racing campaigned to a pair of championships in the American Le Mans Series has found a new home in the 'Racing in New York State' exhibit at the Saratoga Automobile Museum. The exhibit is a major part of the museum and honors through the display of racing cars and significant artifacts the history of motorsport in New York State. Dyson Racing founder and CEO Rob Dyson and VP for Motorsports Chris Dyson spoke this past Saturday before more than 250 attendees as part of the day-long Lost Speedways gathering, the museum’s largest annual program. Chris Dyson, who in 2010 drove this Lola to a historic victory in the American Le Mans Series race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and other identical team cars to a pair of championships, spoke about the stunning performance of the car and the physical demands it makes on its drivers. “Driving a car like this one for a single lap, much less for several hours at a time as we do in endurance sports car prototype racing, requires the highest level of fitness. You regularly experience up to 3.5 Gs in braking and cornering. For every hour behind the wheel, I spend ten hours a week in the gym working on both strength and endurance.” Constructed by Lola Cars in Huntingdon, England, the shape of the B09/86’s body in conjunction with the rear wing and diffusers produced approximately 4,000 pounds of downforce, enabling the Lola to achieve phenomenal braking and cornering performance, and theoretically for the 1800-pound car to drive at high speed on an upside-down road. Power came from a Mazda MZR-R aluminum-alloy, 2.0-liter turbocharged in-line four-cylinder engine. The MZR-R, which was developed by Advanced Engine Research, Ltd. of Baselton (UK) produced over 500 horsepower at turbo boost levels limited by the series rules. IMG_6829
1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7 -- 'Bond in Motion' Exhibit Saratoga Automobile Museum February 2023 Per the Saratoga (NY) Automobile Museum: "In the film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1969), audiences witnessed George Lazenby's only appearance as James Bond, as well as Bond's only marriage. Both James and the future Mrs. Bond, Tracy Draco (Diana Rigg), can be seen driving her Mercury Cougar throughout the film, including the pre-title sequence and the main car chase in the Swiss Alps. Helping Bond escape the arch-villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld's henchmen, Draco shows off her driving skills along treacherous, icy, mountain roads before ending up in the middle of a stock-car race on a frozen track. According to the Ian Fleming Foundation, the 1969 Cougar XR-7 2DR convertible shown above has a powerful CJ 428 V8 engine and a black convertible top. It was used extensively in the production of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service', from the film's beginning through to the chase in the Alps.
