CONFERENCE HOUSE
STATEN ISLAND, NY
Conference House is a historic house located in the Tottenville neighborhood of Staten Island, New York. It is the only remaining 17th-century structure in the city. The house was built in 1680 and was originally owned by Christopher Billopp, a British naval officer and politician.
The Billopp family lived in the house until 1845, and it was later converted into a tavern and inn. During the Revolutionary War, a peace conference was held at the house in 1776, which was attended by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge. The purpose of the conference was to negotiate a peace treaty between the British and the American colonies, however, no agreement was reached.
The house is now owned by the City of New York and is managed by the Parks Department. It is open to the public and offers tours and educational programs about the history of the house and the Revolutionary War. The house is a three-story brick building with a gambrel roof and is furnished with period furniture. There is also a large garden, which is surrounded by a stone wall.
The Conference House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a New York City designated landmark. It is a popular tourist attraction and a reminder of the history of Staten Island and the Revolutionary War.
