The Municipal Art Society of New York City (MAS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1893 to promote the appreciation, understanding, and preservation of New York City's architecture, urban design, and public spaces. MAS works to preserve and enhance the unique architectural, cultural, and historical identity of New York City through advocacy, education, and policy initiatives.
MAS has been instrumental in the preservation of many of New York City's most iconic landmarks and neighborhoods, including Grand Central Terminal, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Central Park. MAS's advocacy efforts have also been essential to the passage of landmark legislation such as the 1961 Landmarks Preservation Law, and the introduction of innovative urban policies such as NYC's outdoor seating permit program.
MAS also leads educational programs for both adults and children, including lectures, tours, and workshops, to help New Yorkers gain a greater understanding of the city's architecture and history. They also organize public events to celebrate the city's cultural and civic life, such as the MAS Summit for NYC, an annual gathering of urbanists and civic leaders from around the world, and MAS Unwrapped, an annual holiday event featuring tours and interactive activities.
In addition to its advocacy and educational efforts, MAS also publishes books, guides, and articles related to the history and architecture of New York City, and provides resources and support to the next generation of urbanists through the MAS Urban Planning Fellowship.
