The Drawing Center is a nonprofit institution located in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City that is dedicated to the exhibition and study of drawings. Founded in 1977 by the artist and teacher Lynne Cooke, the Drawing Center has served as an important resource for emerging and established artists, scholars, and the general public. The Drawing Center is the only not-for-profit institution in the United States to focus solely on the exhibition and study of drawings.
The Drawing Center's mission is to provide a public forum for the exhibition, interpretation, and study of drawings of all periods and from around the world. The institution is committed to exhibiting works on paper that span the history of the medium, from the 15th century to the present. The Drawing Center also serves as an educational resource, offering a variety of public programs, including lectures and workshops, as well as an extensive library and archives.
The Drawing Center's permanent collection includes over 1,000 drawings from the 15th century to the present. The collection features works by European and American artists, including works by masters such as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Francisco Goya, as well as modern and contemporary artists such as Jasper Johns, Louise Bourgeois, and Robert Rauschenberg. In addition to the permanent collection, the Drawing Center also hosts rotating exhibitions and special projects.
The Drawing Center is open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, 12 pm to 6 pm, with extended hours on Thursdays. Admission is free for members and students, and $5 for non-members.
