The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is a private, non-profit federation of 75 national scholarly organizations devoted to the advancement of humanistic studies. Founded in 1919 and based in New York City, it is the preeminent representative of American scholarship in the humanities and related social sciences. It sponsors fellowships, research, and publications to advance the work of its member organizations, which range from the American Historical Association to the Modern Language Association.

The ACLS has provided fellowships and grants to thousands of scholars since its founding. It is best known for its ACLS Fellowship Program, which has awarded more than 10,800 awards to date. These grants support research in fields such as history, literature, philosophy, and the arts. Awards are given for the study of a single subject, the writing of a book, or the exploration of a broad theme across disciplines.

The ACLS also administers programs to strengthen the teaching of the humanities and to support the work of scholars in early stages of their careers. For example, the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships provide support to scholars in the final stages of their doctoral studies. The ACLS also provides research grants and supports the work of individual scholars.

In addition to the grants and fellowships, the ACLS has a strong commitment to public outreach and education. It produces a series of publications, such as the Humanities E-Book, which make scholarly work available to the public. It also publishes the Humanities Indicators, a comprehensive compilation of data on the humanities in the United States. In addition, the ACLS hosts a number of public programs, including conferences, symposia, and lectures.
