Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MOCADA) is a nonprofit museum located in Brooklyn, New York. It is dedicated to preserving and presenting art that is created by and inspired by the African diaspora. MOCADA was founded in 1999 by Laurie Cumbo and James Bartlett, and it is the first Black-led contemporary art museum in New York City. MOCADA houses an extensive permanent collection of artwork, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations, mixed media and video art. The museum also hosts rotating exhibitions and educational programs, such as lectures, workshops, and seminars.
In addition to its exhibitions and educational programs, MOCADA also has a small gift shop, which sells books, prints, and other items inspired by the artworks in its collection. The museum strives to create a space for discourse and exploration of the complexities of African diasporic culture, and to foster a greater understanding of the importance of the African diaspora in contemporary art.
MOCADA is a unique and important cultural institution that provides a platform for contemporary African diasporan art. Through its exhibitions, educational programs, and gift shop, MOCADA encourages the appreciation and understanding of African diasporic culture.
