Founded in 1975, Friends of Historic New Utrecht (FHNU) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the New Utrecht neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. FHNU works to ensure that the neighborhood’s history is remembered and celebrated by hosting lectures and events, offering guided tours, and maintaining monuments and historic sites.
FHNU is committed to preserving the cultural and historic significance of the neighborhood. It works with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure that historic sites are maintained and protected, and that new development does not impede on existing structures. FHNU is also involved in the maintenance and upkeep of several monuments, including the Revolutionary War Memorial and the Old Stone House, which is the only building from the Revolutionary War era still standing in Brooklyn.
The organization also organizes lectures, guided tours, and special events to promote the history of the neighborhood. FHNU also works to promote the study of local history by offering classes and workshops for children and adults.
FHNU is dedicated to preserving the unique history of the New Utrecht neighborhood, and ensuring that its residents appreciate and protect the area’s rich heritage. Through its various initiatives, FHNU works to make sure that the neighborhood’s history is not forgotten.
