Rockets Away! 2012 Student Launch Projects (NASA, Marshall, 4/22/12) Specially crafted rockets soared high into the skies April 22 at the 2011-12 NASA Student Launch Projects challenge. More than 500 students, representing 53 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities in 28 states, launched rockets of their own design -- complete with working science payloads or engineering payloads -- at Bragg Farms in Toney, Ala. The students vied to see whose rocket could come closest to the 1-mile altitude goal and safely return its onboard science payload to Earth. Fifty-one teams took part, though two faced mechanical or technical issues and did not launch. Ten preliminary awards were presented, and the grand prize -- $5,000 from ATK Aerospace Group in Salt Lake City, Utah -- will be awarded May 18 after final post-flight analysis and review are complete. The Madison County Veterans Memorial Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization located in Huntsville, Alabama that was founded in 1999. The organization focuses on honoring and recognizing the service of veterans in Madison County and the surrounding area. The foundation works to build memorials and monuments to honor those who have served in the military, and to educate the community about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families. The foundation also holds events and activities throughout the year to celebrate the contributions of veterans and their families.

The Memorial Foundation works to maintain and promote the existing veteran memorials in Madison County, as well as to plan and build new memorials as needed. The foundation also provides educational opportunities that allow members of the community to learn more about the history of veterans and their contributions to society. LAGEOS I Laser Geodynamics Satellite (NASA, Marshall, Archive, 1976) The LAGEOS I, Laser Geodynamics Satellite, was launched on May 4,1976 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The two-foot diameter, 900-pound satellite orbited the Earth from pole to pole and measured the movements of the Earth's surface relative to earthquakes, continental drift, and other geophysical phenomena. The mirrored surface of the satellite precisely reflected laser beams from ground stations for accurate ranging measurements. Scientists at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. came up with the idea for the satellite and built it at the Marshall Center. TBEX Comes to NASA NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center hosted participants attending The Travel Blog Exchange conference for a tour of the center May 4, 2017. TBEX is the largest conference and networking event for travel bloggers, online travel journalists and social media enthusiasts. The group toured facilities that are building hardware for the Space Launch System, NASA’s new rocket, and also got visit the Payload Operations Integration Center which monitors science experiments for the International Space Station 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, 365-days a year. Preparation for Pouring the Concrete Foundation of Test Stand 4697 A crane, at right, puts reinforcing steel in place in October 2014 to prepare for pouring the concrete foundation of Test Stand 4697 at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The structural test stand is one of two new stands under construction at Marshall that are critical to development of the Space Launch System. SLS will be the world's most powerful rocket for human space exploration, able to carry astronauts in the Orion spacecraft on deep-space missions, including the journey to Mars. The 85-foot-tall Test Stand 4697 will use hydraulic cylinders to subject the liquid oxygen tank and hardware of the massive SLS core stage to the same loads and stresses it will endure during a launch. The stand is rising in Marshall's West Test Area, where work is also underway on the 215-foot-tall towers of Test Stand 4693, which will conduct similar structural tests on the SLS core stage's liquid hydrogen tank. Launch of Saturn vehicle, SA-1 (NASA, Marshall, Archive, 10/61) On October 27, 1961, the nation looked on as the first Saturn vehicle, SA-1, lifted off from Cape Canaveral and soared to an altitude of 137 kilometers before splashing down 344 kilometers downrange into the Atlantic Ocean. Developed at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun, SA-1 incorporated a Saturn I, Block I engine and was the product of three long years of development. The flight of SA-1 demonstrated the vehicle’s structural integrity, verified the concept of the clustered Saturn booster, and inspired confidence in the Marshall team. First Stages of the Saturn IB Rockets at Michoud Assembly Facility (Archive: NASA, Marshall, 01/68) In January 1968, the Saturn V S-IVB stage that housed the orbital workshop, which was renamed Skylab was unloaded from the Super Guppy, the NASA plane built to carry oversized cargo, at Redstone Airfield in Huntsville, Ala. The workshop measured 22 feet (6.7 meters) in diameter, and 48 feet (14.6 meters) in length. The Saturn V S-IVB stage was modified at the McDonnell Douglas facility at Huntington Beach, Calif., for a new role as America's first space station. The initial concept for the workshop was devised at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville; the center also managed the development of Skylab hardware and experiments. 45th Anniversary of Apollo 9 (Archive: NASA, Marshall, 03/03/69) The Apollo 9 astronauts, left to right, James A. McDivitt, David R. Scott, and Russell L. Schweickart, pause in front of the Apollo/Saturn V space vehicle that would launch the Apollo 8 crew. The launch of the Apollo 9 (Saturn V launch vehicle, SA-504) took place on March 3, 1969. The Apollo 9 spacecraft, in the lunar mission configuration, was tested in Earth orbit. The mission was designed to rehearse all the steps and reproduce all the events of the Apollo 11 mission with the exception of the lunar touchdown, stay, and liftoff. The command and service modules, and the lunar module were used in flight procedures identical to those that would later take similar vehicles to the Moon, and a landing.
