CONFERENCE HOUSE

STATEN ISLAND, NY

The Conference House is a historic house located on the southern tip of Staten Island, New York. The house was built in 1680 and is the oldest surviving home in New York City. It was originally built by Christopher Billopp, a British Naval officer.

The Conference House was the site of a failed peace conference between the British and American representatives in September 1776. The purpose of the conference was to end the American Revolutionary War and restore peace between the two countries. The conference failed and the war continued.

The house remained in the Billopp family until 1868 when it was sold to the City of New York. The house was then used for a variety of purposes including a summer home for a local doctor, a Quaker Meeting House, a restaurant, and an inn.

The house was restored to its original condition in the mid-1970s and is now a National Historic Landmark. It is open to the public and offers tours and programs throughout the year. The house contains many historical artifacts from the era of the Revolutionary War and offers a glimpse into the past.

The Conference House is a reminder of the failed peace conference and the importance of the Revolutionary War. It is also a reminder of the rich history of Staten Island and its significance in the development of the United States.
