Friends of the Roswell Zoo Inc. (FOTRZ) is a non-profit organization based in Roswell, New Mexico. Founded in 1991, the organization is dedicated to the conservation and improvement of the Roswell Zoo and its associated animal care facilities. FOTRZ works with the City of Roswell and other organizations to ensure that the Zoo is maintained in a healthy and safe environment for the animals, visitors and staff.

FOTRZ supports the Zoo through fundraising activities and public education. Funds raised are used to purchase animal care supplies, create special exhibits, and sponsor events. Additionally, FOTRZ offers volunteer and intern opportunities, field trips, and sponsors summer camps.

FOTRZ also hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Examples of past events include the Annual Zoo-bration, a family friendly event with live music, food, and activities for children; the Annual Holiday Party, which features a festive atmosphere and holiday-themed activities; and the Annual Zoo Run, an event that celebrates the Zoo's commitment to conservation and health.

FOTRZ is committed to promoting the importance of conservation and animal care. The organization works to educate the community on the importance of caring for animals, and to inspire the next generation of animal caretakers. Through its activities and events, FOTRZ is dedicated to providing the community with a safe and enjoyable experience while visiting the Zoo.

He waived his hand in front of me and told me there is no such thing as aliens. Then he told me that “These are not the Tiki Gnomes you’re looking for.” Of course they weren’t. I was looking for different Tiki Gnomes!
Annular Solar Eclipse - Ring of FIre I think these images of the annular eclipse look more like bullseyes. They were the best part of experiencing the not-quite-total eclipse in Roswell.

The 2nd image in the sequence shows 2nd contact (C2) at the beginning of annularity, and the 4th (towards the upper right) shows C3. The elusive Baily's beads effect seen in both is caused by sunlight shining through some parts of the rough lunar terrain (craters, mountains, valleys, etc.), creating a "string of beads" along the lunar limb. This is the first of many upcoming posts from my grand adventure to New Mexico with my best friend, Grace. After I flew to DFW, we drove out west to set up under the pristine dark skies of the Cosmic Campground in Gila National Forest, an international dark sky sanctuary. The next day, we drove back east and stopped at the NRAO VLA (Very Large Array) in central NM. And finally, we set up for the eclipse in the Salt Creek Wilderness just 1.5 miles away from the centerline, giving us a near-perfect ring of fire during totality.
