SOUTHWEST ART HISTORY COUNCIL

The Southwest Art History Council is an organization based in Santa Fe, NM and dedicated to the study, preservation and promotion of the visual arts of the Southwest. Founded in 1982 by a group of scholars, curators and artists, the Council provides educational programming, conducts research and offers resources to engage the public in Southwest art.

The Council's mission is to promote the appreciation and understanding of the art, design and culture of the Southwest through research, education, and public engagement. The Council also organizes an annual conference and publishes a quarterly journal, The Journal of the Southwest.

The Council's programming includes lectures, symposia, museum exhibitions, traveling exhibition programs, workshops and classes. The Council also provides resources for teachers and students, including lesson plans and educational materials. Additionally, the Council sponsors an annual juried art competition, the Annual Southwest Art History Council Exhibition, and the Outstanding Student Achievement Award.

The Council is supported by member dues, donations, and grants from public and private institutions. Additionally, the Council is a member of the New Mexico Council for the Arts, a state agency that supports arts and cultural organizations. The Council is also affiliated with the Western Art History Association and the International Center for the Arts of the Americas.
