The Southeastern New Mexico Historical Society is a non-profit organization based in Carlsbad, New Mexico, dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of southeastern New Mexico. DSCN1839 Oxy and many other oil and gas companies operate what are called "recycled" water ponds, where contaminated liquid waste is dumped and oil is separate from water for use in drilling and fracking.

DSCN1906 The U.S. Bureau of Land Management manages around 1/3 of all lands and minerals in the New Mexico Permian Basin. While this federal agency is charged with managing public lands and minerals to protect health, safety, and the environment, the Bureau seems to have largely abandoned this duty in the Permian Basin. While the agency's Carlsbad Field Office is responsible for management, the Bureau has given the oil and gas industry a free pass to pollute and destroy public lands throughout southeast New Mexico.
