The Canal Society of New Jersey (CSNJ) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of New Jersey’s canal heritage. Located in Morristown, NJ, the CSNJ was founded in 1972 to protect and maintain the Delaware and Raritan Canal (D & R Canal). The Society works to preserve the canal’s history and educate the public about its significance. The D & R Canal was an important transportation route during the 19th century. It was used to transport coal, lumber, and other goods between New York City and Philadelphia.

The CSNJ is committed to preserving the canal’s historical significance, and the organization works to promote the canal’s recreational and educational use. The Society offers guided tours of the canal, boat rides, and special events throughout the year. In addition, the CSNJ works with local schools and other organizations to provide educational programs about the canal’s history. The Society is also involved in restoration and preservation projects along the canal.

The CSNJ is dedicated to preserving and promoting the D & R Canal’s historical and cultural significance. The organization works to educate the public about the canal’s importance in New Jersey’s history and to ensure that it remains a part of the state’s heritage for generations to come.

Queen cage This queen was a keeper -- very nice docile bees -- &amp; the beekeeper was happy to find her.

Last summer my mother noticed honeybees swarming around the shed in her backyard, so she called a beekeeper. They turned out to be nesting in the neighbor's shed, and the beekeeper said he could collect them but it would have to wait until spring so the colony would be strong enough to survive. This weekend he came with his girlfriend/assistant and extracted the colony. They marked out the colony location with an IR camera, sawed out that section of 3/4&quot; plywood floor with a circular saw, lifted it out, and turned it upside down on a folding table. Then they disassembled it, comb by comb. The bees they vacuumed up, collecting them in a shopvac-head bucket for later return to the new hive. The honeycomb they harvested. The brood comb they placed in empty beehive frames, holding the pieces in place with rubber bands. They proceeded slowly, looking for the queen the whole time. Just when they were ready to give up, they found her in a remnant of comb back in the shed. The bees were amazingly docile, at least compared to what I had expected. Queen, bees, and comb were reunited in their new digs, a double-decker hive, and are off to a new life in the countryside. The floor was screwed back down, with the exit from the sub-floor airspace to the outside blocked by sprayfoam.

Boss Hog BBQ, Plainfield, NJ I was reading about a BBQ joint in South Plainfield, New Jersey Named Boss Hog Barbecue that I hadn’t visited. It’s a 34 mile drive each way, but most of it is on the Garden State Parkway (70 mph). I arrived at a small place with two large “family style” tables and barstools in front of the cutting stations.

Ribs aren’t normally my thing because they are usually wet and sloppy. However they had “Memphis style” dry rubbed ribs so I ordered the 1/4 lb. brisket &amp; 1/4 rack of ribs platter with Southern green beens and coleslaw. I would testify in court that the brisket and ribs were just as good as 90 percent of the BBQ I’ve had in Texas.

The brisket was perfection. It had been smoked in a real outdoor offset smoker using a mix of three different types of wood. Apparently the offset smoker was welded together by a genuine redneck in Georgia. (Yes, I know “redneck” and “Georgia” are redundant). The bark was excellent, the meat was moist (SO MOIST!) and it was firm enough to stay in one piece, but not so firm that you couldn’t cut it with the side of a fork. The combination of the three woods gave it a really nice flavor. I could see all of the delicious juices run out when they were slicing it on the carving block.

The ribs were exactly how I like them. Just firm enough to stay on the bone, but “al dente”. They were not chewy and the meat easily came off. The coleslaw was excellent and the Southern green beans were, most likely, the best I’ve ever had. They were flavorful and had a sizable quantity of chunks of meat mixed in. I believe there was some onion in there as well.

All of their sauces were hand made. I tried the Alabama white because I’d never had that type before. It was delicious. But, to be honest, that BBQ brisket and those ribs would have been just fine with no sauce.

The owner/pitmaster is originally from Upstate New York (Watertown) and shows up before sunrise to fire up the smoker for the day’s selection of meats.

I don’t know how it happened, but somehow, three pounds of delicious smoked brisket fell into a bag for me to take home. I couldn’t allow myself to smell it while I was driving, so I put it in the trunk with Little Texas Aggie Bear to protect it.

40th Annual Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone Parade. Raritan, NJ. Gunnery Sergeant, “Manilla John” Basilone Parade. Raritan, NJ.

Gunnery Sergeant “Manilla John” Basilone is the only rated man to be awarded both the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.

Congressional Medal of Honor citation:

For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action against enemy Japanese forces, above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines in the Lunga Area, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 24 and 25 of October 1942. While the enemy was hammering at the Marines defensive positions, Sgt. Basilone, in charge of 2 sections of heavy machine guns, fought valiantly to check the savage and determined assault. In a fierce frontal attack with the Japanese blasting his guns with grenades and mortar fire, one of Sgt. Basilone’s sections, with its “gun crews”, was put out of action, leaving only 2 men able to carry on. Moving an extra gun into position, he placed it in action, then, under continual fire, repaired another and personally manned it, gallantly holding his line until replacements arrives. A little later, with ammunition critically low and the supply lines cut off, Sgt. Basilone, at great risk to his own life and in the face of continued enemy attack, battled his way through hostile lines with urgently needed shells for his gunners, thereby contributing in large measure to the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment. His great personal valor and courageous initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

“For extraordinary heroism while serving as a leader of a Machine-Gun Section of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, Fifth Marine Division, in Action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, 19 February 1945. Shrewdly gauging the tactical situation shortly after landing when his company’s advance was held up by the concentrated fire of heavily fortified Japanese blockhouse, Gunnery Sergeant Basilone boldly defied The smashing bombardment of heavy caliber fire to work his way around the flank and up to a position directly on top of the blockhouse and then, attacking With grenades and demolitions, single-handedly destroyed the entire hostile strongpoint and its defending garrison. Consistently daring and aggressive as he fought his way over the battle-torn beach and up the sloping, gun-studded terraces toward Airfield Number One, he repeatedly exposed himself to the blasting fury of exploding shells and later in the day coolly proceeded to the aid of a friendly tank which had been trapped in an enemy mine field under intense mortar and artillery Barrages, skillfully guiding the heavy vehicle over the hazardous terrain to safety, despite the overwhelming volume of hostile fire. In the forefront of the assault at all times, he pushed forward with dauntless courage and iron determination until, moving upon the edge of the airfield, he fell, instantly by a bursting mortar shell. Stout-hearted and indomitable, Gunnery Sergeant Basilone by his intrepid initiative, outstanding professional skill and valiant spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of fanatic opposition, contributed materially to the advance of his company during the early critical period of the assault, and his unwavering devotion to his comrades and reflects the highest credit upon Gunnery Sergeant Basilone and the United States Naval Service.”
