The Somerset County Historical Society in Bridgewater, NJ, is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Somerset County, New Jersey. The Society was founded in 1924 and is located in the old Van Veghten House, which was built in 1751 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Society’s mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Somerset County and its people, and to make this information available to the public. The Society has a collection of more than 3,000 artifacts, including photographs, documents, and objects related to Somerset County’s history. The Society also has an extensive library and archives, which include books, newspapers, maps, and family papers.
The Society offers a variety of educational programs, such as lectures and tours, as well as workshops and other special events. The Society’s annual events include the Music in the Meadow concert series, the Revolutionary War Encampment, and the Antique Car Show. The Society also publishes a quarterly newsletter, as well as books and other publications about Somerset County’s history.
The Society is open to the public on weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am to noon. Visitors are welcome to explore the Society’s collections and exhibits and attend lectures and tours. The Society also has a gift shop, where visitors can purchase books, prints, and other items related to Somerset County’s history.
