Suneagles Golf Course & Former Fort Monmouth, NJ Officers' Open Mess When I was stationed at Fort Monmouth, NJ in 2001, this was the officers’ club and military golf course. The building and golf course had originally been built in the 1920s as a civilian course/club and purchased by the U.S. Army in the 1940s. When Fort Monmouth was closed in 2011, the government sold it to a civilian company which is putting millions into renovating the course and the clubhouse.

I took a look inside. The prime contractor is doing a great job. It can’t be easy renovating a building that’s approximately 100 years old. You know every time they pull down a board or ceiling, they’re going to find something they didn’t expect to be there, so it’s taking some time.

This is the only place I’ve allowed myself to play piano in front of others. We had some good times there when I was stationed at Ft. Monmouth. They had a nice bar on the main floor for respectable officers, civilians, and their families. They had a basement bar like many older Army officer clubs called the rathskeller where wild people looking for the dirty stuff hung out.

It looks like they have managed to keep the huge old lounge / meeting area fireplace and the wooden circular staircase that goes up to the second level. I’m not 100% sure, but I believe there used to be an officers’ pool in back of the club which appears to have been filled in. There use to be several officer TDY quarters on the third level. I’m not sure what will happen to those spaces. Probably office space for the golf course business office.
