Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university in Princeton, New Jersey. Founded in 1746 in Elizabeth as the College of New Jersey, Princeton is the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. The institution moved to Newark in 1747, then to the current site nine years later, and renamed itself Princeton University in 1896.
Princeton is an exclusively undergraduate four-year institution, with a student population of about 5,400 undergraduates and 2,300 graduate students. The university consists of the college, the Graduate School, and several other schools. The university has highly competitive admission standards and is home to some of the most distinguished faculty in the world.
The campus covers 500 acres in a suburban setting and has extensive facilities for both research and teaching. It contains numerous buildings of architectural interest, including several 19th-century buildings and the neoclassical Nassau Hall. The university organizes the Princeton University Art Museum, the Princeton University Library, and the Princeton University Press.
