LUCY THE MARGATE ELEPHANT

Lucy the Margate Elephant is a historic landmark and tourist attraction located on the beach in Margate, New Jersey. The six-story elephant-shaped building was built in 1881 by James V. Lafferty as a way to attract attention to his real estate business. The structure was originally used as a hotel, with guests staying in rooms located in the elephant’s belly and legs.

In the early 1900s, Lucy was converted into a tavern and a variety of other businesses over the years. In 1969, the Save Lucy Committee was formed to preserve the landmark, and in 1970, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The building has undergone extensive renovations over the years, including restoration of the original woodwork and installation of a new steel frame to support the structure. Today, visitors can take guided tours of Lucy’s interior, which includes a gift shop and museum on the first floor, and a spiral staircase leading up to the top of the elephant’s back for scenic views of the beach and ocean.

Lucy the Margate Elephant is a beloved icon of Margate and a unique piece of American architectural history.
