GILMAN GARRISON HOUSE

The Gilman Garrison House is a historic house located in Exeter, New Hampshire. Built in 1709, it is one of the oldest surviving houses in the state and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The two-story, wood-frame structure is an example of a traditional New England garrison house. Garrison houses were built by early settlers as a defensive measure, with the first floor constructed to withstand attack from Native Americans. The Gilman Garrison House is a rare example of a two-story garrison house, as most were built with only one story.

The house is a rectangular structure with two large chimneys, a gambrel roof, and a central door. The walls are a combination of clapboard and shingle siding, with windows of various sizes on the front and sides. The house is surrounded by a stone wall, which was part of the original fortification.

Inside, the house has a center hall with two parlors on either side. The first floor also includes a kitchen, dining room, and a small chamber. On the second floor, there are four bedrooms and a small chamber. The house is furnished with period furniture and artifacts, including a gun rack and a loom.

The Gilman Garrison House is open to the public for tours and special events. It is a remarkable example of the history of Exeter and the state of New Hampshire.
