The African American Cultural Society (AACS) in Las Vegas, NV is dedicated to preserving, celebrating and promoting the rich cultural heritage of African Americans in the Las Vegas community. The AACS was founded in 1985 by a group of individuals committed to raising awareness of the contributions of African Americans to the history, culture and development of Las Vegas.

The AACS has a variety of programs and activities, including cultural events, educational forums, scholarships, and other community outreach services. Through its various programs and events, the AACS strives to both honor the past and ensure that African American culture is passed on to future generations. These events include annual Kwanzaa celebrations; African American heritage celebrations; and special events such as lectures and seminars, workshops, and more.

The AACS is also a great resource for the Las Vegas community, providing a platform for individuals to engage in positive dialogue and learn more about African American culture and history. The AACS also works to connect members of the community with other organizations in the area, helping to foster a strong sense of unity and collaboration. The AACS is dedicated to providing quality services to the Las Vegas community and to creating a vibrant cultural atmosphere in the city.

Western Air Express Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum

It was Las Vegas' good fortune In 1925 to lie on a natural air route between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Federal legislation that year spurred the growth of air travel In the United States by creating a national network of air mail routes to be operated by private couriers. Western Air Express, a new Los Angeles-based company bid successfully for the civil air mail route connecting Los Angeles and Las Vegas with the central transcontinental route at Salt Lake City.

On April 17, 1926, pilots in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City pulled on coveralls and goggles, strapped on their revolvers, and climbed Into the open cockpits of two new Douglas M-2 biplanes. Stopping to refuel and pick up mall at dusty Rockwell Field In Las Vegas, they completed their flights In a leisurely eight hours. Flight Instructions were simple: stay to the right of the railroad tracks to avoid colliding with the plane headed In the opposite direction.

Carrying mail made the flights profitable but the law's long range objective was to develop passenger service. WAE adapted the five-foot mall compartment of the M-2 to hold removable chairs for two parachute-toting passengers. Just five weeks after the first airmail flight, the first passengers arrived and Las Vegas became one of the first American cities to have combination passenger and airmail service.

By the end of the decade, WAE reached as far east as Dallas and Kansas City and as far north as Seattle, operating the longest network of any American airline. Sleeker and faster Boeing monoplanes soon replaced the sturdy M-2s for mall service and spacious 12 seat Fokker tri-motors provided more passenger comfort. Despite a forced merger of most of Its routes with Transcontinental Air Transport In 1930, and severely restricted operations during World War II, the renamed Western Airlines emerged as one of the strongest air carriers in the 1950s through 1970s. It merged with Delta Airlines In the 1980s.

The Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum

Easily the best known American aircraft series of World War I, the Curtiss JN-4/JN-6 series, or the Jenny came to symbolize an entire era of aviation history.

It was developed In 1914, by Glenn Curtiss and B. Douglas Thomas. When Curtiss combined Thomas's N model with his own J, the JN, Immediately dubbed the Jenny, resulted. The design was called a &quot;tractor&quot; aircraft because the engine was in the front of the plane, as opposed to a “pusher&quot; aircraft where the engine was behind the pilot. The aircraft series, by 1919, had been used to train approximately 95% of all pilots in the United States. Also produced In Canada, where It was called the Canuck, It was a popular trainer for the the Canadian Air Force.

After the war, thousands of Jennies were declared surplus. It became the plane of choice for hundreds of ex-military pilots. Many became barnstormers, making their living by giving airplane rides and demonstration flights. The first flight into Las Vegas In 1920 was made in a Jenny, and many local residents took their first airplane rides during the week it was here.

As a civilian aircraft, the Jenny survived in great numbers until about 1928, when new airworthiness regulations grounded most of them. The last military models were scrapped the year before. The barnstorming era ended as aviation became safety conscious. The Jenny was finished as a sport plane, but lived on through movies and the popular imagination.
