Jack Frye and TWA Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum McCarran International Airport Jack Frye was a Hollywood stunt flyer when he, Paul Richter, and Walter Hamilton founded Standard Airlines on February 3, 1926. The airline flew Fokker F-VIIs between Los Angeles and Tucson. In 1930, "Pop" Hanshue bought the airline and merged its routes with Western Air Express, incorporating Frye, Richter, and Hamilton into the management of Western. A few months later, Postmaster General Walter Brown forced the merger of Western with Transcontinental Air Transport, creating a new company called Transcontinental and Western Air, Inc., or TWA. Frye became a Vice-President and Director of Operations for the new company. He was instrumental in the development of the Douglas DC-1, 2, and 3, by asking rival aircraft manufacturers for a plane which could compete with the Boeing 247. In 1934, at the age of 30, Frye became President of TWA, the youngest president of any major airline in the country. Later, in a dispute with his board over the purchase of the new Boeing 307, Frye approached Howard Hughes about investing In TWA. Over the next decade, Hughes and Frye built TWA Into one of the largest airlines in the United States. Differences between Hughes and Frye over management of the airline lead to Frye's resignation In 1947. Frye became president of General Anlline and Film (GAF) Corporation, a position he held until 1955. He was active In aviation pursuits until his untimely death In 1959. An innovator in aircraft and operations, Frye made a lasting impact on the growth of commercial aviation.
The Commercial Turboprop Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum McCarran International Airport To compete with internal combustion piston engines for short routes or smaller airfields, a new type of jet-powered engine was developed for commercial aircraft during the 1950s. The turboprop, or jet-powered propeller engine, transformed the small airline market. The first successful turboprop commercial airliner was the Vickers Viscount. Developed with backing from the British Government, the Viscount first flew In 1948. Capital Airlines first used the new plane in the United States. Developed primarily to replace the DC-3, the Fokker F-27 became the most successful European commercial turboprop. First flown In 1955, It was Fokker's first post-war design. In the United States, the F-27 Friendship was built by the Fairchild Aircraft Company. Using the F-27, Bonanza Air Lines, based In Las Vegas, became the first all Jet-powered airline in the world In 1960, when It retired the last of Its DC-3s. The only successful United States turboprop was the Lockheed L188 Electra. The Electra was first flown In 1957, and later became the basis for one of the great mysteries In aircraft design. The new aircraft was extensively studied before being Introduced Into commercial service, but two crashed In the first year of commercial use. After Lockheed, with help from many other aircraft companies, studied the unexplained crashes, the problem was found and corrected. The Electra's reputation was rehabilitated, and the plane went on to a long distinguished career. The turboprop engine Is a mainstay today of smaller aircraft and aircraft designed for use in areas jets cannot land. They are an important part of today's commercial aviation fleets.
George & Peg Crockett Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum McCarran International Airport George Crockett, a native of Missouri, traveled widely as a representative of the Stinson Aircraft Company of Detroit. His flights to Las Vegas in the 1930s proved fortuitous for the development of aviation in southern Nevada. Noting the absence of a good refueling stop for private pilots between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, he relocated here in 1941. Purchasing the equipment and planes of a civilian pilot training program operation which had gone out of business In Iowa, he leased land south of Las Vegas for an airfield. The name for the field, Alamo Airport, was a natural; Crockett was a descendent of Davy Crockett. Peg Crockett, nee' Nickerson, lived nearby. In 1938, her family came to Las Vegas from Pasadena, California, and her architect father began creating southern Nevada's first guest ranch. The ranch provided seclusion, swimming, and horseback riding for many among Hollywood's elite, Including Alfred Hitchcock, Rosalind Russell, Irene Dunne, and Dean Jagger. The proximity of the Hidden Well Ranch was a boon to Alamo Airport. Peg Nickerson In turn was bitten by the flying bug. She took flying lessons at Alamo and soloed In 1942. To pay for her lessons, she worked at the airport. She and George were married In 1948. After their field was sold to the County In 1948 to become today's McCarran International Airport, the Crocketts continued to operate Alamo Airways, serving general and corporate aviation. Through their efforts, Alamo Airways became a model general aviation facility. It eventually offered complete service to the private pilot; charts, 24-hour line service, radio service, rental cars, a restaurant and lounge, and lodging at a 22-room motel. George Crockett died In 1990. Mrs. Crockett donated a large collection of Alamo photos and artifacts to Clark County which became the foundation of the Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum.
John A. Macready Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum McCarran International Airport In 1913, John Macready, a young Stanford graduate, moved to Searchlight, Nevada, where his father was part owner of the Quartet Mine. He became Justice of the Peace, a role he held for four years. With the outbreak of World War I, he joined the Army Air Service. In 1920, Macready became chief of the Flight Test Section of the Air Service. In that role, he accomplished many record-setting flights. He made the first cropdusting flight on August 3, 1921, near Troy, Ohio. That same year, he set an altitude record by taking a Le Pere biplane to 40,800 feet, earning him the Mackay Trophy for the most Important aircraft flight that year. He earned the trophy a second time for an endurance record flight In 1922. In May 1923, Lieutenant Macready with Lt. Oakley Kelly became the first to fly non-stop from New York to San Diego. It was their third attempt, and took 26 hours, 50 minutes and 39 seconds at an average speed of 92 mph. Extra fuel tanks were added, and a second set of controls installed in the cabin to allow for the changing of pilots during flight. This flight earned Macready and Kelly the Mackay Trophy, making Macready the only person to receive the award three times. Resigning from the service In 1927, Macready organized and headed Shell Oil's Aviation Department. He was recalled to active duty during World War II, flying with the 12th Air Force, and later commanded Merced Army Air Field in California, retiring with the rank of Colonel. He died at his home in 1979.
Grand Canyon Air Lines Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum McCarran International Airport Visitors to Las Vegas today may be surprised to learn that in the 1930s, Boulder Dam was southern Nevada's top tourist attraction. Visitors from around the world flocked to see the mammoth public works project. Many of these visitors were also interested in seeing the nearby Grand Canyon. Among the first to recognize the tourist potential of flights over the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas and Boulder City was Glover E."Roxy" Ruckstell. Ruckstell earned his reputation on the AAA Championship Auto Racing Circuit during the teens, driving against Eddie Rickenbacker, Harris “Pop“ Hanshue and Jack Frye. During World War I, he helped develop the Liberty aircraft engine. After the war, he earned his fortune selling the "Ruckstell Axle" for the Model T Ford. Like Rickenbacker, Hanshue, and Frye, Ruckstell saw a future In aviation, acquiring Grand Canyon Air Lines In 1931. Ruckstell moved the airline to Boulder City. For fares ranging from $5 to $37.50, visitors received a breathtaking aerial view of Lake Mead, Boulder Dam and the Grand Canyon. Flying Ford Tri-Motors at a leisurely 90 mph, round trips to the Grand Canyon usually took all day. Ruckstell, finding the business unprofitable, sold the airline to G&G Airlines of Tucson and concentrated his efforts on boat tours and the new Lake Mead Lodge. Grand Canyon Air Lines remained in business under the ownership of G&G until the start of World War II. Today, the Grand Canyon air tour industry is a burgeoning part of southern Nevada aviation with many airlines offering sightseeing flights to an estimated 750,000 annual passengers.
